Learn about White Culture

We're not surprised that some people who read our Washington Post op-ed could not see whites as having a distinct culture, since the culture on top of our hierarchies is often thought of as the culture of everyone.

If you would like to learn about white culture,  the best way is to listen to a lower group on the hierarchy who can see it clearly.

The book "Drylongso: A Self Portrait of Black America" by John Langston Gwaltney is terrific. The book is a compellation of interviews with African Americans and was written in 1981. Even though the book was written three decades ago, don't let that deter you. Most of the basic components of the white culture they describe are still intact. The interviews are rich with statements about how white people think and act. If you're white, make sure to focus on listening and resist becoming insulted. Then you'll be treated to a wonderful opportunity to learn.

"The Week" – Best Opinion – US

Our Washington Post op-ed "White men have much to discuss about mass shootings" was covered in "The Week" magazine as one of the top three opinion columns in the U.S. Below is their excellent synopsis of our article.

Why are most mass shootings perpetrated by white males? asked Charlotte Childress and Harriet Childress. In the debate over why America suffers so many killing sprees, race and gender are "the elephant in the room." As Newtown, Aurora, Tucson, Columbine – "month after month, year after year" – it is seething white men and teenagers who use guns to massacre scores of strangers. The gun lobby blames flaws in the mental health system. "But women and girls with mental-health issues are not picking up semiautomatic weapons and shooting schoolchildren." White men "are not used to being singled out" as a cause of social pathology, but they make up 30 percent of the population and commit at least 70 percent of mass killings. Why? Why do so many white males find it fun to play violent video games? Why do white males buy guns in far larger numbers than other groups, and why are so many of them bitterly opposed to even reasonable gun-control proposals? If we start asking honest questions about men, guns, and violence, perhaps we'll get some useful answers.

Goofy Plan

Today the chair of the Republican National Committee, Reince Preibus, reported on the CBS show "Face the Nation" that his party has a quality of contacts problem. They have to win the heart war.

We admit that the Disney dog Goofy could win our hearts, just like Harriet's dogs Sarah and Forest. But when Mr. Preibus says that comments like "legitimate rape" are "goofy," he's not winning any heart war with us. How about showing that Republicans take those comments seriously, and instead use words like sexist, insensitive, clueless, degrading, damaging, dangerous, and arrogant.

The Republicans are going to spend $12 Million to sweeten up their same ole outdated hierarchical messages. Sounds like a GOOFY plan to us. We predict that people will see through changing the window dressing but still selling the same items inside the store.

Way to Go, Men

"Gentlemen, it's time to write a new code of manhood," the White Ribbon website says. "It Starts With You."

White Ribbon is the world’s largest movement of men and boys working to end violence against women and girls, promote gender equity and healthy relationships, and a new vision of masculinity.

In our January 4 blog, we stated that in order for the crimes against women to stop, focus must also be on the source of the rapes - the men. In the United States, almost all of our talk of rape prevention concerns females – how females can defend themselves and lower their chances of being raped by males.

It's encouraging to see men in Canada who are working with older men, young men, and boys to educate them about language and behaviors, as well as harmful ideas of manhood that lead to violence against women.

Witches Moving Up the Religious Hierarchy?

"Every Wiccan I’ve ever known is either a compulsive deep Dungeons and Dragons player or is a middle-aged, twice-divorced older woman living in a rural area who works as a midwife,"  Fox News contributor Tucker Carlson said on the air. The comments came after Carlson learned that the University of Missouri's guide to religions lists practices and observations for religious holidays from many faiths, including pagan beliefs.

After pressure from over 40,000 people, two days after the show, Carlson apologized on Twitter: “To Wiccans and pagans: Sorry for my pointlessly nasty remarks. Your holidays still confuse me, but you seem like nice people."

The internet provides us with opportunities to stand together to stand up for lower groups when clueless people at the top make ridiculous statements about people they don't know.

But one thing we do know is that people on the bottom can see people on the top clearly, but it's not as acceptable to talk about those on top. We can imagine what would happen if someone on National television were to dare to talk about the religion on the top – Christianity – in the same vein:

"Every Christian I’ve seen lately is either a compulsive gun-toter or is an elder-aged, twice-elected older man living in Washington D.C, who works at taking services and retirement from taxpayers who have paid for them, and giving more and more to the rich."  It sounds ridiculous and even paranoid when it's said about the top group, yet accepted when said about agroup on our religious hierarchy.

Intolerance and ignorance toward wiccans causes us to use the word and image of "witch" for a negative, scary person. The movie Wizard of Oz and Disney movies use images of witches that spread stereotypes, fear and mistrust of the spiritual practice.  This negative attitude is very serious in Papua New Guinea, where there are still public tortures and burning of women who are accused of witchcraft.
